A South America trip for travellers in their sixties and seventies is a different planning problem from a single-country trip. The distances are continental, the ground rises and falls by three thousand metres between stops, and every border adds a flight and a formality. We plan these journeys around those three variables first, and around the sightseeing second.

What changes on a multi-country trip after sixty

The pace of the days is the part most people ask about, and it is the easiest to fix. The three that decide whether a South America route works are less obvious, and we settle them before the itinerary is written.

Altitude

In the order you meet it

Cusco sits at 3.400 m, Lake Titicaca at 3.800 m, and San Pedro de Atacama at 2.400 m. Wherever the routing allows, we place the low ground first and give the high ground a settling night before any full day of walking.

The highest overnight of each route is in the table above.

Flights

And how many of them

A four-country route can run to seven internal flights. We count them before we quote, keep departures out of the early morning where the schedule allows, and use daytime sectors so a travel day still ends with an unhurried dinner.

The flight count is on the quote before you decide.

Borders

Which are not sightseeing days

Crossing from Argentina into Chile or Peru takes a morning. We treat those as travel days with nothing else booked, rather than fitting an excursion around them.

A driver on each side, and the afternoon left free.

If the trip stays inside Argentina, Argentina tours for seniors covers the same ground without the border days, and Patagonia for seniors goes deeper into the south alone. If what you want is the same journey with the flights, transfers, and meals settled in advance, that is South America all inclusive.

Why book a guided South America trip

South America rewards travellers who are not in a hurry, which is the advantage of travelling at this stage of life. What it asks in return is planning. Internal flights are frequently rescheduled, the good hotels in Cusco and El Calafate fill months ahead, and the difference between a comfortable day and a long one is often a single connection. We hold the whole itinerary in one file, so when a flight moves, the rest of the trip moves with it and you are told before you land.

Best time for a South America trip

Our South America itineraries run year-round, and the best window depends on how far the route travels.

  • October to April: the far south is open, with long daylight and the park circuits and ferries running.
  • May to September: the Andean north is at its driest, which suits Cusco, the Colca Valley, and the Uyuni salt flats.
  • November to March: Iguazu and Rio are warm and green, and the waterfalls are at their fullest.

For a route that combines the far south with the Andean north, the shoulder months of October, November, March, and April usually work in every section at once.

South America tours for seniors FAQ

No. Our itineraries are private, so the pace is set for the people travelling rather than for a group average. We do ask about walking distance, altitude history, and any medication that needs refrigeration, because those change the routing.

It depends on the route. Argentina, Chile, and Brazil stay below 1.500 m on almost every itinerary. Peru and Bolivia are the exception: Cusco is at 3.400 m, Lake Titicaca at 3.800 m, and the Uyuni salt flats at 3.650 m. Every route on this page states its highest overnight.

Three things. We arrive at high ground with a settling day before any full excursion, we place the low-altitude section first where the flights allow, and we book hotels with oxygen available in Cusco and Puno.

Between two and seven, depending on the length of the route. The count is on the quote before you decide, along with the departure times.

As a rule we plan for departures after 09:00. Some sectors only run once a day at an early hour, and where that happens we say so in advance and keep the previous evening free.

Yes. Every excursion has a shorter version, and on most days there is a viewpoint reachable by vehicle. The itinerary marks which days involve uneven ground.

It is planned as a travel day with nothing else booked. A driver on each side, the formalities handled with you, and an arrival that leaves the afternoon free.

We tell you which ones apply to your passport and by when, and we supply the booking confirmations that some countries ask for on arrival. The applications themselves stay with you, because they are personal documents.

No, and we recommend arranging it before you book the international flights. We can point you to insurers that cover travellers over seventy, which not all of them do.

Yes, and several of these routes work well for three generations. The pace is the thing to agree first, and we usually build in a slower morning for the older travellers while the younger ones do the longer version.

Six to nine months for travel between December and March, and for anything that includes Machu Picchu, where the permits are dated and limited. Four months is usually enough outside those windows.

Our local team rebooks it and adjusts what follows, and wherever the schedule allows we move the affected highlight to another day inside your trip at no extra cost.

What Your Argentina Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how an Argentina package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to the national parks listed in your itinerary; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. Domestic flights between regions are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount. Argentina is a long country and these flights matter to the total, so we never leave them implied.

One closed day does not undo a route

Argentina runs four thousand kilometres from north to south, so weather is always local. When a storm holds a boat in Patagonia or rain cuts a road in the northwest, we move that visit inside your itinerary and bring forward whatever works that day. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.

Tell us when you can travel. We will build the route.

Answer within 24 hours, from a person, not an autoresponder.
