Almost every page about Mendoza is about Malbec. The city sits at the foot of the highest mountain outside Asia, and that changes what a week here can be.
Lujan de Cuyo around 1.000 m, Maipu lower and closer to the city, and the Uco Valley above them at 1.100 to 1.500 m. The wine changes with the height, and so does the drive.
Where most trips start and end
The highest peak outside Asia is a three-hour drive from the city, and the park viewpoint asks nothing more than a short walk. The old road to Chile passes the Puente del Inca on the way.
A day trip, not an expedition
The Mendoza river runs whitewater from October, the pre-cordillera has estancias for riding, and Cacheuta has hot springs an hour out. All of it fits around the tastings.
What fills the days between bodegas
For the vineyards specifically, see Mendoza wine tours, and for the whole country's wine map Argentina wine tours. Or tell us your dates and we will build the province around them.
Mendoza is dry almost all year, so the calendar is about what the vines are doing and whether the high road is open.
Picking runs from late February through April, with Malbec in Lujan de Cuyo peaking in March. The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia falls in the first week of March.
Book months ahead for March
Flowering and the first growth, warm days, long light and far fewer visitors than at harvest. The mountain still has snow on it, which is when the views are best.
The quiet alternative
The vines are bare and the high pass to Chile can close with snow, but the bodegas stay open and the prices drop. Aconcagua park closes to trekking, though the viewpoints stay reachable.
Cheapest, and still worth it
No month is closed here. The orange ones are the harvest and the spring, which is when the vineyard itself is worth looking at rather than just the cellar.
