Ushuaia is the closest port on earth to the Antarctic Peninsula, about a thousand kilometres of open water away, and that water is the Drake Passage. Crossing it takes two days in each direction. Whether you sail it, fly over it or build the trip around it is the first decision, and it shapes the price, the length and the kind of holiday this turns out to be.
The passage between Cape Horn and the peninsula is where three oceans meet with no land to slow them down. It can be glassy and it can be genuinely rough, and nobody knows which until the forecast a few days before. It is four of your days either way.
Four days of the total
The fly cruise option crosses the Drake by air in a couple of hours each way and joins the ship at the peninsula. It costs more per day and hands back four days, which for a limited holiday is often the better trade.
Time back, at a price
Most voyages work the northern peninsula and turn back well short of the Antarctic Circle at sixty six degrees south. Reaching it needs a longer itinerary and more ice, and it is the clearest difference between the trips on this page.

The port everything leaves from is at Ushuaia tours, the colonies you can reach without a ship at Argentina penguin tours, and the rest of the far south at Patagonia tours.
The ice closes the peninsula for the rest of the year. Inside that window the month changes what you see more than the route does: November is ice and courtship, December and January are chicks and long light, February is whales.
The pack ice is still breaking up, the landscapes have not been walked on and the penguins are courting and building nests. Fewer ships, more ice in the way, and the best snow of the season.
The cleanest ice
The warmest weeks, up to twenty hours of usable light, chicks hatching and the largest number of landing sites open. It is also the busiest part of the season and the most expensive.
Peak, for good reasons
Humpbacks and minkes feeding before they leave, chicks fledging, colonies worn and muddy. Ships thin out and the last departures of the season are often the best value.
The whale window
Departures stop when the ice returns. Landing sites are decided by the ice and the weather on the day, not by the itinerary.
Every quote we send lists this in writing, ship by ship. As a rule, this is how an Antarctic voyage is priced.
Your cabin on the vessel you choose, with all meals on board; the expedition team, daily briefings and every Zodiac landing the ice and weather allow; the loan parka and boots on most vessels; port and government taxes; the Ushuaia hotel night and the embarkation transfer where your itinerary includes them.
International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance, which is compulsory on Antarctic sailings and must cover medical evacuation; the Buenos Aires to Ushuaia flight unless your quote states otherwise; drinks outside meal service; optional kayaking, camping or diving, which we price in writing beforehand; gratuities for the crew.
No Antarctic sailing follows a fixed map. Landings are chosen each morning by the expedition leader according to ice, wind and wildlife, and a site missed heading south is often reached on the way north. Operators commit to the number of landings attempted, not to named beaches, and we tell you which vessels have the strongest record before you book.
