Almost everyone who drives out of Salta does the Quebrada de Humahuaca or the Cafayate run and comes back the same evening, and those belong in a Salta itinerary rather than on a road trip page. What is on this page is the other thing the northwest does well: routes that leave and do not come back, heading south through provinces most itineraries never reach.
Three provinces between Salta and Mendoza with almost no international traffic in them: adobe villages, hot springs, and the highest volcanoes outside the Himalaya on the horizon. This is the part of the northwest that stays empty.
The empty middle
These routes work between roughly two and four thousand metres, and the passes go higher. The first day is deliberately gentle for that reason, and the itineraries build in the time your body needs to settle.
Take the first day slowly
The northwest is dry most of the year, but January and February bring the summer rains and the dirt sections wash out. From roughly April onward the roads are reliable and the light is at its best.
Avoid the summer rains
The country-wide view is at Argentina road trips, the day loops out of the city at Salta tours, and the far end of Ruta 40 at Mendoza road trips.

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Northwest package is built.
Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to the national parks and the Quebrada de Humahuaca sites listed in your itinerary; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.
International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. The Buenos Aires to Salta or Jujuy flight is quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.
Summer rain can cut the gravel roads towards Cafayate or Iruya for a few hours. Our drivers check each stretch with the provincial road service every morning, and when one is closed we run the loop the other way round or move that leg a day. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
