Salta is the city you fly into. Jujuy is where the ground turns the colours people come for, and where the height starts to matter.
The Cerro de los Siete Colores sits behind a village of 900 people at 2.200 m. The light changes it completely between morning and late afternoon, which is why we build in both.
The image that sells the northwest
Humahuaca runs 155 km along an old Inca road and the rock records 75 million years of sediment. Tilcara has the reconstructed pucara fort and the best base for a night at altitude.
World Heritage since 2003
Salinas Grandes sits at 3.450 m and the Hornocal viewpoint at 4.350 m. Both are day trips from the valley, and we schedule them after a night at Tilcara so the body has had time.
Tell us if altitude worries you
Most routes through Jujuy start in Salta, an hour and a half down the road. For the vineyards of the same region, see Cafayate. Or tell us your dates and we will build the north around them.
Jujuy sits in the same dry-and-wet rhythm as the rest of the northwest, and the difference between the two seasons is not subtle.
Clear skies over the Quebrada, the hills at their sharpest, and the mountain roads at their most predictable. Cold nights in June and July, around 13 °C by day.
The window we recommend
Ten to sixteen wet days a month. It is greener and far emptier, and it is when the carnival of the Quebrada happens, in January or February.
Come for the carnival, not the weather
Purmamarca is at 2.200 m, Salinas Grandes at 3.450 m and Hornocal at 4.350 m, all year round. The rain changes the roads; it does not change the height.
Plan the ascent gradually whenever you come
Months in orange are the dry season. The summer rains fall as afternoon storms rather than all day, so a wet month is not a lost month, just one with a different plan.

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Northwest package is built.
Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to the national parks and the Quebrada de Humahuaca sites listed in your itinerary; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.
International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. The Buenos Aires to Salta or Jujuy flight is quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.
Summer rain can cut the gravel roads towards Cafayate or Iruya for a few hours. Our drivers check each stretch with the provincial road service every morning, and when one is closed we run the loop the other way round or move that leg a day. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
