In Iberá the animals are not afraid of you, and that is the whole thing

Hunting stopped here decades ago and the capybara, caiman and marsh deer around Colonia Carlos Pellegrini grew up without reason to run. You do not stalk anything: you get into a boat, and they are there, three metres away, ignoring you. It is a completely different kind of wildlife watching from the one people expect.

The scale

One of the largest wetlands on the continent

Roughly one and a half million hectares of lagoon, floating islands and flooded grassland in Corrientes. It is second only to the Pantanal in South America and it receives a tiny fraction of the visitors.

Huge, and almost empty

The rewilding

Jaguars, back after seventy years

Giant anteaters, pampas deer, giant otters, macaws and, since 2021, jaguars have been reintroduced here in the most ambitious rewilding project in Argentina. Seeing a jaguar is unlikely; knowing they are back changes the place.

An ecosystem being rebuilt

Getting there

It is the effort that keeps it quiet

Colonia Carlos Pellegrini is reached by a long dirt road from Mercedes or a transfer from Posadas, and that is precisely why it stays as it is. Plan a travel day at each end and it becomes easy.

A day in, a day out

The ranch stays are at Argentina ranch vacations, the riding at Argentina horse riding holidays, and the country-wide wildlife at Argentina wildlife tours.

Iberá Wetlands Tours FAQ's

The Iberá Wetlands are teeming with biodiversity. Common sightings include capybaras, marsh deer, caimans, howler monkeys, and over 350 bird species. Depending on the season and the specific area of the wetlands you visit, you might also glimpse other wildlife, from otters to giant anteaters.

While the wetlands are accessible and offer wildlife viewing year-round, the austral spring (September to November) and fall (March to May) are considered ideal due to milder temperatures and abundant bird migrations.

Boat tours are a popular way to explore the Iberá Wetlands, but they're not the only option. Many tours also offer horseback riding, guided walks, and even kayaking, each providing a unique perspective of this biodiverse region.

Yes, there are lodges and eco-friendly accommodations in and around the Iberá Wetlands, allowing travelers to experience the magic of dawn and dusk in this wildlife-rich area. Many of these lodges offer guided tours as part of their stay packages.

While it's possible to explore some parts of the wetlands independently, having a local guide greatly enhances the experience. Guides possess a deep knowledge of the area's ecology, can spot and identify wildlife more efficiently, and ensure a respectful and safe interaction with the environment. Iberá Wetlands tours transport travelers to a realm where the intricate balance of nature is vividly on display. Every ripple in the water and rustle in the reeds tells a story, crafting a narrative of life in one of South America's most pristine and biodiverse sanctuaries. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply seeking solace in the great outdoors, the Iberá Wetlands promise encounters that are as enriching as they are captivating.

What Your Iberá Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how an Iberá package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to Iberá Provincial and National Park, and the guided outings run by the lodge; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. The Buenos Aires to Posadas or Corrientes flight and the road transfer to the lodge are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.

Heavy rain changes the track, not the wildlife

Iberá is reached on earth roads that soften after a storm, and the lodges are built around that. When the track is wet we go out by boat or on horseback rather than by vehicle, and the night walk moves to the next dry evening. Capybaras, caimans and marsh deer are there either way. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
