The road from Salta to Cachi leaves a green valley, winds up a gravel and asphalt pass into cloud forest, and comes out on a plateau of cactus and thin air. It takes most of a day each way, the altitude is real and the landscape changes four times. It is the best drive in the northwest and it rewards a day taken slowly.
The Cuesta del Obispo climbs through cloud forest that drips even in the dry season and then opens onto the Recta del Tin Tin, a dead straight road across the Cardones plain. Two entirely different landscapes in ninety minutes.
Four hours, with stops
The plateau is covered in candelabra cactus several metres tall, some of them centuries old, against bare mountains. It photographs unlike anywhere else in Argentina and there is almost nobody there.
Stop and walk in it
The pass tops out well above three thousand and the village stays high. First timers feel it, so the sensible itineraries put this on day two or three rather than the morning after landing, and keep the first night lower.
Not on your first day
The southern end of the loop is at Cafayate tours, the roads beyond at Salta road trips, and the region in full at Salta tours.

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Northwest package is built.
Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to the national parks and the Quebrada de Humahuaca sites listed in your itinerary; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.
International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. The Buenos Aires to Salta or Jujuy flight is quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.
Summer rain can cut the gravel roads towards Cafayate or Iruya for a few hours. Our drivers check each stretch with the provincial road service every morning, and when one is closed we run the loop the other way round or move that leg a day. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
