The town exists because of Perito Moreno and most people are there for exactly that. Land in the afternoon, spend the following day at the glacier, fly out the morning after. It is a short trip that works beautifully, and it gives the glacier the day it deserves rather than splitting your time between two places.
The balconies alone take three or four hours if you let them, and the boat that runs along the front face adds another. Booking the evening flight out rather than the afternoon one gives it the room it deserves.
Do not book an afternoon flight
El Chaltén is three hours each way and needs a night. The ranches on the steppe need an afternoon. Neither fits, and an itinerary that promises them in two days is promising a lot of driving.
Three days for anything else
El Calafate is a few streets of restaurants and outfitters built around the traffic to the glacier. Nobody comes for the town, and one evening in it is exactly the right amount.
