Prices are per person, from, for the 2026 to 2027 season. Per day is a comparison aid, not how the trip is billed. Every itinerary is tailor-made and quoted individually.

El Chaltén is the one place where the trail starts at your door

There is no park gate, no transfer and no ticket. The paths to Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre begin in the village itself, which is why a place of a few hundred permanent residents has become the walking capital of Argentina. It also changes how you plan: the day is decided in the morning, looking at the sky, not booked in advance.

The two walks

Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre

Laguna de los Tres sits under Fitz Roy and takes most of a day, with the last hour steep enough to be remembered. Laguna Torre is longer and flatter, with the glacier at the end. Between them they are why almost everybody comes.

One each, ideally

Three days is the minimum

Because of the weather

Fitz Roy is clouded in more often than not, and a two day visit can easily see nothing. Three days buys one bad day and still leaves both walks possible. Four is comfortable.

Buy yourself a spare day

Sleeping out

The only way to get first light

Camping at Poincenot puts you an hour below the viewpoint at dawn, which is when the granite goes red and the wind has usually not started. It also turns the walk into a comfortable day rather than a long one.

Worth the tent

The glacier an hour and a half south is at Perito Moreno glacier, the guided and self guided circuits at guided Patagonia trekking, and the rest of the village at El Chaltén tours.

Hiking & Trekking in Chaltén holiday FAQ's

El Chaltén offers a wide range of trekking options, from easy, scenic walks suitable for beginners to more challenging treks for experienced hikers. Popular easier hikes include Laguna Capri, while more strenuous options include the trek to Laguna de los Tres, which offers stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy.

Good hiking boots, comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, a durable backpack, and plenty of water are essential. For longer or more challenging treks, consider bringing trekking poles, extra food, and possibly navigation tools like a map or GPS. Check with your tour provider if additional gear is required or provided.

Assess your physical fitness and hiking experience honestly, and read the tour descriptions carefully. Many tours provide information on the distance, elevation gain, and terrain type. If in doubt, consult with the tour provider for advice on which trek would be most suitable for you.

The best time for trekking in El Chaltén is during the Patagonian summer, from late October to April. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions, though it's still important to be prepared for sudden weather changes.

Both options are available. Guided treks offer the advantage of expert knowledge and added safety, particularly for more challenging routes. However, many of El Chaltén’s trails are well-marked and suitable for independent hikers. Always inform someone of your hiking plan if you choose to go independently.

What Your Patagonia Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Patagonia package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to Los Glaciares and Tierra del Fuego national parks; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. Domestic flights inside Patagonia are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.

If the weather closes a trail, the day is not lost

Patagonian wind changes plans, and we plan for it. Every key day has a same-region backup: if the wind closes the glacier boat, you see Perito Moreno from the walkways instead; if the Fitz Roy viewpoint is in cloud, we swap days inside your itinerary. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.

Tell us when you can travel. We will build the route.
