Anyone can look at the Beagle Channel and understand it. What is invisible without somebody to tell you is everything that happened on it: the Yámana who lived on these shores for six thousand years, the missionaries at Harberton, the penal colony that built the town and the ships that never made it round the Horn.
They lived along these channels in bark canoes with fires burning aboard, which is where the name Tierra del Fuego comes from. The museums tell it and the coastline stops looking empty once you know.
Why it is called Land of Fire
Founded by the missionary who wrote the first Yámana dictionary, still run by the same family, with a marine mammal museum built from strandings. It is the single richest stop in Tierra del Fuego and it is entirely lost without context.
The best guided day
Ushuaia was a penal colony and the prisoners built the port, the railway and most of the early town. The museum occupies the original wing, and it reframes everything you have already walked past.

If the port holds a departure, we move the sailing to the next clear slot inside your stay and bring the Tierra del Fuego park day or the Martial Glacier walk forward instead.
