The mountains behind Ushuaia are not high, but the treeline sits at around six hundred metres and above it is bare rock and wind. That compresses everything: an hour of walking takes you from beech forest to open mountain, and the channel is always in sight. It makes the activity here unusually varied for the distance covered.
Laguna Esmeralda through peat bog and beech to a glacial lake, or the Senda Costera along the shore inside the park. Neither is long and both change landscape completely on the way.
Short, and it changes
The Beagle Channel stays a few degrees above freezing all year, so paddling here is done in dry suits with support boats. It is the most memorable thing the town offers and the one with the least room for improvisation.
Dry suits, not wetsuits
The 4x4 routes go over peat and through the forest to Lago Escondido, on tracks that are not roads in any normal sense. It is the way to reach the interior of the island without walking for two days.
