Salta is the base for all of it. The number of days decides how far from the city you get, and how high.
The colonial center, Purmamarca and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The road works between 2.000 and 3.000 m: noticeable, and fine for most travellers.
The classic first visit
The fifth day goes south through the Quebrada de las Conchas to the highest vineyards in Argentina. Torrontes is the grape, and it only grows like this here.
The day most people wish they had added
Tolar Grande, the salt flats and the desert above 3.500 m. It asks more of the body, and we schedule it after the Quebrada so the altitude comes gradually.
Check the altitude with your doctor if in doubt
The wine that keeps appearing in these routes has its own page at Cafayate wine tours, and the country-wide picture is at Argentina wine tours. Or tell us your dates and we will build the northwest around them.
The northwest has a dry season and a wet one, and they are not subtle. From April to October it barely rains; from November to March there are between 10 and 16 wet days a month.
Clear skies over the Quebrada, the colours of the hills at their sharpest, and the roads at their most predictable. Days around 18 °C, cold nights in June and July at 13 °C.
The window we recommend
Ten to sixteen wet days a month and around 20 °C. It is greener and emptier, and it is also when the carnival of the Quebrada happens, in January or February.
Go for the carnival, not for the weather
The Quebrada works between 2.000 and 3.000 m and the puna above 3.500 m all year round. Rain shifts what the roads look like; it does not shift what the height asks of you.
Plan the ascent gradually in any season
Months in orange are the dry season. The rains of the southern summer fall as afternoon storms rather than all day, so a wet month is not a lost month — it is a month with a different plan.

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Northwest package is built.
Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to the national parks and the Quebrada de Humahuaca sites listed in your itinerary; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.
International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. The Buenos Aires to Salta or Jujuy flight is quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.
Summer rain can cut the gravel roads towards Cafayate or Iruya for a few hours. Our drivers check each stretch with the provincial road service every morning, and when one is closed we run the loop the other way round or move that leg a day. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
