Patagonian wildlife lives on the edges, not in the middle

The steppe that fills most of Patagonia is desert, and its animals are spread across it accordingly: guanaco, rhea, and condors if you look up at the right moment. What people picture when they say Patagonian wildlife is concentrated on the coast instead, either on the Atlantic side around Chubut or in the channel at the far south. That is a geography worth knowing before you build the itinerary.

The Atlantic coast

Where the numbers are

Right whales, orcas, elephant seals, sea lions and the largest Magellanic penguin colony on the continent all sit within a few hundred kilometres of Puerto Madryn. No other stretch of Patagonia comes close, and most wildlife itineraries are really trips to Chubut.

Chubut does the heavy lifting

The Beagle Channel

The southern version

Cormorants, sea lions, the small penguin colony at Isla Martillo and whatever the channel brings through. Less volume than the Atlantic, more setting, and it fits inside an Ushuaia trip rather than needing one of its own.

Smaller, and more scenic

The steppe and the mountains

Desert travel, with its own magic

Guanaco, grey fox, armadillo, condor and, with luck and patience, huemul in the forest. This is desert country: the animals are spread thin over enormous distances, so seeing them is a matter of hours on the road and the right time of day. It has a quality the coast does not, and the logistics are genuinely demanding, which is why these itineraries are built rather than booked.

Distance, patience and planning

The whales in detail are at Patagonia whale watching, the colonies at Argentina penguin tours, and the country-wide view at Argentina wildlife tours.

Patagonia Wildlife Hoilday FAQ's

Expect to witness a diverse array of wildlife, including Andean condors, sea lions, pumas, guanacos, and possibly even orcas, depending on the time of year and specific locations visited.

While Patagonia's wildlife can be observed year-round, certain species have peak seasons. For instance, the best time to see orcas is from February to April, while pumas are more active during the Patagonian winter months.

Yes, our wildlife tours are family-friendly. However, some treks might be challenging for younger children, so we recommend checking the tour details or consulting with us beforehand.

Safety is our priority. All our tours are led by experienced guides familiar with the region's wildlife and terrain. We ensure regular communication with local authorities and provide safety gear when necessary.

While we aim to provide close encounters, we also prioritize the safety and well-being of the animals. We maintain a respectful distance, ensuring our presence doesn't disturb their natural behaviors. Our guides are well-versed in responsible wildlife viewing practices.

What Your Patagonia Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Patagonia package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to Los Glaciares and Tierra del Fuego national parks; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. Domestic flights inside Patagonia are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.

If the weather closes a trail, the day is not lost

Patagonian wind changes plans, and we plan for it. Every key day has a same-region backup: if the wind closes the glacier boat, you see Perito Moreno from the walkways instead; if the Fitz Roy viewpoint is in cloud, we swap days inside your itinerary. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
