A village that is a trailhead

El Chalten was built in 1985 to hold a border, and it ended up as the trekking capital of Argentina. Nothing here needs a bus to start.

From the last street

No transfer to the trail

Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre both begin at the edge of the village. You walk out of the hotel door and onto the path, which is why two nights already buy two full walking days.

Unique among the four gateways

The two big ones

Eight hours, and four

Laguna de los Tres is eight to nine hours with a steep final kilometre to the lake below Fitz Roy. Laguna Torre is four to five and almost flat. Most people do the second first.

Neither needs technical skill, both need weather

The mountain decides

Fitz Roy hides

The summit is clear a fraction of the days, and the forecast changes by the hour. We build in a spare day whenever the trip allows, because a second attempt is worth more than a longer first one.

The reason we suggest three nights, not two

The glacier is three hours down the road at El Calafate, and the two are usually done together. For the longer walking routes, see Patagonia hiking and trekking. Or tell us your dates and we will build the trekking around them.

When to travel to El Chalten

This is the opposite of El Calafate, three hours up the same road. El Chalten has a season, and outside it most of the village shuts.

JFMAMJJASOND
December to February

The full season

Long days, all trails open and every business running. It is also the busiest: the popular paths carry hundreds of walkers a day in January.

Book beds early, walk early

October, November, March

The good shoulders

The trails are open and the village is working, with noticeably fewer people and lower prices. Wind and cold are more likely, and so is having a viewpoint to yourself.

What we recommend to walkers

Mid-May to September

Mostly shut

Most hotels close for winter from around mid-May, restaurants run on skeleton hours and tour services stop. Buses from El Calafate drop to one or two a day and can suspend in bad weather.

Winter mountaineering only

The dark months are a service closure, not a legal one: the village stays inhabited and a handful of hostels stay open for climbers. But for a walking trip, October to April is the window.

What Your Patagonia Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Patagonia package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to Los Glaciares and Tierra del Fuego national parks; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. Domestic flights inside Patagonia are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.

If the weather closes a trail, the day is not lost

Patagonian wind changes plans, and we plan for it. Every key day has a same-region backup: if the wind closes the glacier boat, you see Perito Moreno from the walkways instead; if the Fitz Roy viewpoint is in cloud, we swap days inside your itinerary. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.

Tell us when you can travel. We will build the route.
