The Circuito Chico is a sixty kilometre loop west of town past the Llao Llao peninsula, and it contains most of what people picture when they think of the Argentine lake district. Add a chairlift for the view from above and one afternoon on the water and you have seen the place properly. That is three days.
Out along the lake shore past Playa Bonita, Bahía López and the Llao Llao peninsula, with beaches, viewpoints and a small church that appears on every postcard. Half a day driving, a full day by bicycle.
Half a day, or a whole one
A chairlift takes ten minutes and puts the whole lake system in front of you at once, which is the moment the geography finally makes sense. Cheap, quick and worth timing for the late afternoon light.
Go late in the day
Nahuel Huapi is big enough to have arms that feel like separate lakes. A boat to Isla Victoria or an afternoon paddling in a sheltered bay is the third thing, and it is what stops the visit being all viewpoints.
