The colony most people picture is not on Península Valdés. Punta Tombo sits about 180 km south of Puerto Madryn on the coast road, so reaching it costs a whole day and means giving up the peninsula for that day. Knowing which colony a trip includes is the only thing that matters when you compare them.
The largest Magellanic colony on the continent, roughly 180 km south of Puerto Madryn. You walk among the birds on marked trails rather than watching from a distance. With the drive both ways it fills the day, and it is at its busiest from November to February.
A full day south
Península Valdés has colonies of its own, visited as a stop inside the peninsula circuit instead of as a separate excursion. Fewer birds and fewer people, and it fits in the same day as the whales and the sea lion colonies.
A stop, not a trip
The penguins are ashore from September to April. The right whales are in the gulfs from June to December. The stretch where both are a safe bet runs from September into early December, which is also when the chicks start to appear.

If wind holds the whale watching boat, we move it to the next window inside your stay and use the Punta Loma sea lion colony or the El Doradillo shore, where whales come close enough to watch from the beach. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
