Four waters, and the temperature is what actually differs

Kayaking in Patagonia is not one activity. A glacial lake at El Chaltén, an Andean lake at Bariloche, a salt gulf at Puerto Madryn and the Beagle Channel are four different propositions, and what separates them is not the scenery but how cold the water is and how hard the wind blows on it.

Lakes

Bariloche and El Chaltén

The Andean lakes are the gentle end: sheltered by forest, warm enough in summer that a capsize is an inconvenience rather than an emergency, and suitable for people who have never held a paddle.

Where to start

Salt water

Golfo Nuevo

Paddling in the gulf at Puerto Madryn puts sea lions in the water beside you, which is the reason to do it. It is also open water, so it runs in the morning before the afternoon wind gets up.

Go in the morning

The channel

Ushuaia, and a dry suit

The Beagle Channel sits a few degrees above freezing all year and the operators there use dry suits rather than wetsuits. It is the most memorable of the four and the one with the least margin for improvising.

Cold, and properly run

The walking those trips are built around is at Patagonia hiking and trekking, the wildlife in the same water at Patagonia wildlife, and the region in full at Patagonia tours.

Patagonia Kayak hoilday FAQ's

While some tours require previous kayaking experience, especially in challenging waters, many are suitable for beginners and offer instruction to ensure safety and comfort.

Popular kayaking spots include the waters around Torres del Paine National Park, the fjords near Tierra del Fuego, and the glacial lakes in Los Glaciares National Park.

While kayaking can be leisurely, it does demand endurance. Cardiovascular workouts, along with strength training focusing on the upper body and core, are beneficial preparations.

Tour operators typically provide kayaks, paddles, life vests, and often wet suits or splash gear. You should bring moisture-wicking clothing, sturdy water shoes, sun protection, and a waterproof bag for personal items.

Yes, there are multi-day kayaking adventures that include camping along the shores of Patagonia's pristine water bodies, offering a deeper immersion into the region's natural beauty.

Kayaking near glaciers is a breathtaking experience but demands caution. Qualified guides ensure safe distances are maintained, and they're knowledgeable about the waters and potential glacier calving activity.

Absolutely! Many operators offer combined packages that can include trekking, horseback riding, or even ice trekking, giving you a comprehensive Patagonian adventure. Kayaking in Patagonia is not just about paddling; it's about immersing oneself in nature's untouched sanctuary. The rhythmic strokes take adventurers deeper into the heart of this wild region, offering perspectives that few other activities can rival. Each journey on the water, whether amidst ice formations or along rugged coastlines, is a meditative experience—a dance with nature, where the vastness of Patagonia is felt with every splash and ripple.

What Your Patagonia Trip Includes

Every quote we send lists this in writing, trip by trip. As a rule, this is how a Patagonia package is built.

Included

In every package

Hotels selected and checked by our team; private transfers between airports, hotels and excursions; excursions with English-speaking local guides; entrance fees to Los Glaciares and Tierra del Fuego national parks; daily breakfast and the meals marked day by day; a local WhatsApp support line for the whole trip.

Not included

Said upfront

International flights to and from Argentina; travel insurance; meals not marked in the itinerary; personal expenses and gratuities; optional activities, which we price in writing beforehand. Domestic flights inside Patagonia are quoted separately or included depending on the package, and your quote states which, with the amount, so the total is clear before you book.

If the weather closes a trail, the day is not lost

Patagonian wind changes plans, and we plan for it. Every key day has a same-region backup: if the wind closes the glacier boat, you see Perito Moreno from the walkways instead; if the Fitz Roy viewpoint is in cloud, we swap days inside your itinerary. Wherever the schedule allows, we rebook the highlight inside your trip at no extra cost.
