What riding Patagonia actually involves

The three questions riders ask most before booking, answered before the quote.

The season

November to April

The passes are reliably open and the light lasts. Outside those months some sections close with snow, and we route around them or change the dates.

December to February is the sweet spot

The machine

Bike and backup

The bike, the gear, and the support vehicle are part of the route, and the luggage travels in the vehicle rather than on the bike.

Bring your licence; the rest is part of the route

The rest of the group

Riders and passengers

The support vehicle carries whoever is not riding that day, over the same road and to the same table each night. A mixed group works on this route.

The same trip, two ways to travel it

The lakes these roads circle are on the Bariloche tours page. Prefer four wheels? The Argentina road trips run the same passes by car. Or tell us your dates and we will build the ride around them.

Argentina Motorcycle Tours: Patagonia & Northwest Riding Guide

Beyond the headline routes above, we run a full calendar of departures throughout the riding season (October to April, with peak conditions from November through March). Group sizes stay small, typically 6 to 10 riders, so guides can adapt the daily pace to match everyone’s comfort level, whether that’s a relaxed cruiser pace or a more spirited ride through the mountain passes.

Bikes are BMW GS models (800cc and 1250cc) as standard, since they handle Patagonia’s gravel stretches and unpredictable weather better than road-only bikes. Riders with less off-road experience can request additional coaching days before the tour starts, and we always run a short orientation ride on day one to get everyone comfortable with the bike and local road rules.

Solo travelers are welcome, in fact, a good portion of our riders join without a pre-existing group and end up forming lasting friendships with fellow guests over asados and long days in the saddle.

Best Season for a Motorcycle Tour in Argentina

Timing matters more here than in most destinations. Patagonia’s riding season runs roughly from October to April, with January and February offering the longest daylight hours and most stable weather, though wind can still be a factor on open stretches of Ruta 40. The Northwest (Salta, Cafayate) has a longer window, rideable nearly year-round, with April to June and September to November offering the mildest temperatures. If glaciers and dramatic southern light are the priority, aim for November through March.

Combine with other Latin American destinations

Many riders extend their trip to include Chile’s Carretera Austral, one of the most scenic unpaved roads on the continent, or add a few days in Uruguay for a change of pace before flying home. Because Patagonia straddles both countries, a combined Argentina-Chile itinerary is often barely any extra effort logistically, just extra days of extraordinary scenery.

If you’re short on time, a shorter Northwest loop through Salta pairs naturally with a few days of wine touring in Mendoza, giving you both the adventure-riding experience and a slower, more indulgent close to the trip.

Argentina Motorcycle Tours FAQ's

Some experience is recommended, especially for routes that include gravel sections of Ruta 40 or the Carretera Austral. That said, we offer itineraries with gentler daily distances and optional coaching days for riders who are confident but less experienced with off-road conditions.

You'll need a valid motorcycle license from your home country, and in most cases an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required alongside it. We'll confirm the exact documentation needed based on your nationality when you book.

Yes, basic insurance coverage is included in every package, and we strongly recommend adding supplemental coverage for peace of mind on longer off-road stretches. Our team can walk you through the options during booking.

We recommend bringing your own helmet, jacket, and boots for the best fit and comfort, though basic gear rental can be arranged if needed. Given the temperature swings in Patagonia, layered gear works better than a single heavy jacket.

Our tours are designed with flexibility in mind to accommodate unexpected weather changes. In the case of adverse weather, we may adjust the itinerary to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our riders, which might include alternative routes or activities.

Absolutely! Non-riding partners are welcome to join and can travel in the support vehicle. They will be able to participate in all non-riding activities and enjoy the same amenities as riding participants. Note: Please ensure that the provided FAQs are adapted to the specific offerings and policies of your motorcycle tours and verify the details before publishing.

Every tour travels with an on-call mechanic, so breakdowns are handled quickly without derailing the group's schedule. In the rare case a bike needs more extensive repair, we arrange a replacement to minimize downtime.
