There is the dinner show, which is theatre and is very good theatre. There is the milonga, which is a social dance in a neighbourhood hall where nobody is performing for you. And there is the class, which is the only way the other two stop being spectator sports. Most itineraries sell the first and call it tango.
The tango houses in San Telmo and Puerto Madero put on a professional production with dinner. It is choreographed, it is expensive and it is genuinely impressive. Just do not confuse it with what happens in the city after midnight.
Theatre, not social dance
Ordinary halls, ordinary people, codes that take a night to read: the cabeceo, the tandas, who sits where. Visitors are welcome and nobody minds if you only watch, which is what most first timers do.
Go late, watch first
An hour with a teacher before the milonga turns the evening from a performance into something you understand. It is also the single best value thing on any tango itinerary here.
