Argentina beaches mostly sit on the Atlantic coast, and they fall into two groups. The ones people mean when they say the Buenos Aires beaches are 340 to 400 km from the capital by road, while the Patagonian ones are 1,100 km or more away. That distance, more than the sand, decides whether a beach belongs in your trip. Below are the beaches in Argentina sorted into those two groups, with official distances, the season of each coast and what a beach stay costs in days.
If you are still choosing where to go, start with our guide to things to do in Argentina.
Does Argentina have beaches? Two coasts, two different trips
It does, and they are on the Atlantic. Anyone searching for the best beaches in Argentina has to start with the distance. The coast of Buenos Aires province is the one Argentines use for summer holidays, from December to March, according to Visit Argentina, the national tourism promotion site, consulted in October 2026. Its beaches are run as balnearios, beach clubs where you rent a tent for shade and get access to a pool, a restaurant and a bar. Farther south, the coasts of Río Negro and Chubut belong to Patagonia, and their season follows the wildlife.
One thing the word beach does not cover in Argentina is the lakes. The Lake District around Bariloche is a mountain trip, not a swimming one, as we explain in our guide to Bariloche.
Argentina beaches near Buenos Aires: Pinamar, Villa Gesell and Mar del Plata
These are the four towns we checked against official tourism sources. Three of them share one strip of coast:
| Town | Distance | What the tourism offices say |
|---|---|---|
| Pinamar | 340 km from Buenos Aires | Reached by car on a route the town’s tourism site calls safe and fast |
| Cariló | 10 km from Villa Gesell | On the same Route 11 corridor |
| Villa Gesell | 19 km from Pinamar, 103 km from Mar del Plata | Its tourism office publishes a directory of balnearios |
| Mar del Plata | About 400 km by Autovía 2 | Over 47 km of coast, with 2 to 5 days suggested |
Read the table as two bases, not four. Pinamar, Cariló and Villa Gesell are within 30 km of each other, so one hotel serves all three. Mar del Plata is a city of its own: Visit Argentina names Bristol, Popular, Punta Iglesia, Las Toscas, Varese, Cabo Corrientes, La Perla, Playa Grande and Punta Mogotes among its beaches.
Argentina: The First-Timer's Guide
See the whole country on one page before you plan: where everything is, how a first trip usually comes together, key facts on seasons and distances, and where to go deeper once you've chosen your region.
Getting there is the part that surprises people. These are road distances of 340 to 400 km, so allow most of a morning each way, more in high season. For flying, Pinamar’s tourism site sends air travellers to the Mar del Plata airport, Astor Piazzolla, and on by transfer or bus. We did not print drive or train times because we could not confirm current schedules in an official source, so check them before you book.
Argentina beaches in Patagonia: Puerto Madryn and Las Grutas
Here the distances change scale. Puerto Madryn is 1,350 km from Buenos Aires, according to its tourism office. The city is served by El Tehuelche airport, and the Trelew airport is the alternative, both listed on the office’s how to get there page. About 15 km from the centre, Playa El Doradillo lets you watch whales from the shore in winter, according to Visit Argentina.
Las Grutas is farther still. Its tourism office gives 1,112 km from Buenos Aires by the direct route and 1,147 km by Viedma. It sits in the Bahía de San Antonio protected natural area on the Gulf of San Matías, 10 minutes from San Antonio Oeste. The same page offers a distance that changes how you might plan it: Bariloche is 650 km away by Route 23, or 956 km through the Alto Valle. For someone already in the Lake District, Las Grutas is closer than the capital. The office publishes a tide table and tells visitors to consult it, so check the tides before you plan a beach morning.
| From Las Grutas | Distance |
|---|---|
| Viedma | 191 km |
| Neuquén | 415 km |
| Bahía Blanca | 410 km, or 459 km by Viedma |
| Bariloche | 650 km by Route 23 |
| Buenos Aires | 1,112 km |
We found no flight time for Las Grutas in an official source, because the office lists road distances only, so we do not print one.
When to go: the beach season and the wildlife calendar
On the Buenos Aires coast the season is December to March. In Patagonia, the Península Valdés administration publishes a wildlife calendar that works as the real season chart for the Madryn area:
| Animal | Months on the calendar |
|---|---|
| Southern right whale | June to December |
| Orca | February to April, September to November |
| Magellanic penguin | January to April, September to December |
| Southern elephant seal | January to April, September to December |
| Dusky dolphin | January to April, December |
| South American sea lion | All year |
Two readings follow from the table. First, the Patagonian coast has its busiest wildlife months in the Southern Hemisphere winter and spring, the opposite of the Atlantic beach summer. Visit Argentina puts whale watching from the shore in July and August, with mothers and calves close in, and the more active breaching in September and October, which it calls the best months for boat trips. Boats leave daily from Puerto Pirámides from June to December and the outing takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Second, January to April is the overlap: penguins, elephant seals and dusky dolphins are on the calendar while the Buenos Aires coast is in season. If you want both in one summer, that is the window. Our guide to South American penguins covers where to see them, and the best time to visit Patagonia covers wind and sun month by month.
How many days an Argentina beach vacation takes
The days are not the beach days. They are the travel days around them, which is why the same two beaches can take a long weekend or most of a week. This table uses the sources above, and the day counts in the last column are our own reading, not an official figure:
| Beach base | Getting there | Distance from Buenos Aires | Days to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinamar, Cariló, Villa Gesell | Car or bus | 340 km to Pinamar | 3 nights is the floor |
| Mar del Plata | Autovía 2 or flight | About 400 km | 2 to 5 days, per Visit Argentina |
| Puerto Madryn | Flight to El Tehuelche | 1,350 km | 3 nights, longer for Península Valdés |
| Las Grutas | Road | 1,112 km | Only worth adding from the Lake District |
A round trip to Mar del Plata is about 800 km, so two nights means a good part of a day spent on the road. That is the arithmetic that makes a beach stay a decision about your itinerary, not just about the weather. For where a beach week sits inside a full route, see our Argentina itinerary for 10 days, and for the rest of the map our guide to places to visit in Argentina.
Planning Argentina beaches in one page
- Choose the coast first. The Buenos Aires coast is 340 to 400 km from the capital, the Patagonian coast is 1,100 km or more.
- Match the month to the coast. December to March for the Atlantic resorts, June to December for whales at Península Valdés.
- Treat the travel as part of the stay. About 400 km each way to Mar del Plata, 1,350 km to Puerto Madryn.
- Check schedules before booking. We give distances, not timetables.
- Leave the lakes out of the swim plan. The Lake District is a mountain trip.
