The best places to visit in Argentina are not close to each other, and that is the first thing to plan around. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia is 3,228 km by road, according to the national government’s page on Tierra del Fuego, consulted in October 2026, and even the nearest big draws sit about 1,000 km from the capital as the crow flies. A list of places is easy to write. A trip is a choice of which clusters to reach and how many flights to take between them.

This guide does three things. It starts from the official benchmark, UNESCO’s list of 12 World Heritage properties in Argentina. It then measures how far each main base is from Buenos Aires, with official road distances where the government publishes them and our own straight line figures where it does not. It closes with which places pair well and how many a trip of a given length can hold. For what to do once you arrive, our guide to things to do in Argentina takes each region in turn, and our 10 day Argentina itinerary shows one way to string them together.

Which are the best places to visit in Argentina? Start with the official list

UNESCO lists 12 World Heritage properties in Argentina, seven cultural and five natural, according to the World Heritage Centre, consulted in October 2026. It is the one ranking of Argentine places that nobody is selling.

Three of the listings cross borders. The Jesuit Missions are shared with Brazil, whose São Miguel das Missões ruins belong to the same listing. The Qhapaq Ñan is shared by six countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), and the Le Corbusier property spreads over seven, with Casa Curutchet as the Argentine piece.

Argentina: The Pocket Guide

Turn your list of places into a route: the must sees at each base, how many days each one really deserves and how to link them, in a pocket guide for travellers who already know where they're going.

Argentina: The Pocket Guide

Read the table as a map of provinces more than a to do list. Six of the 12 sit in three provinces, Misiones, Santa Cruz and Chubut, two each. The list also leaves out places that most first time travellers name early: Buenos Aires beyond the ESMA site, Mendoza, Bariloche, Salta city and Ushuaia are not World Heritage properties. UNESCO measures heritage, not how well a place works as a base, which is why the next section looks at distance.

How far is each place from Buenos Aires?

The government’s provincial pages publish road distances “by roads and tracks” to the provincial capitals. We use them where they exist and add a straight line figure for every base, which is our own calculation from city coordinates and is the distance a flight covers.

BaseRoad from Buenos AiresStraight line
Mendoza1,050 km986 km
IguazúNot published. Posadas is 1,040 km, and the route from Posadas to Iguazú is 320 km1,066 km
Puerto MadrynNot published. Rawson, the provincial capital, is 1,455 km1,075 km
Salta1,510 km1,286 km
Bariloche1,640 km, according to the city tourism board1,345 km
El CalafateNot published. Río Gallegos is 2,535 km2,080 km
Ushuaia3,228 km2,373 km

The tourism board prints 1,680 km for Bariloche on another page, so treat the road figure as a range. The Posadas to Iguazú distance comes from the national parks administration, which also places the town of Puerto Iguazú 18 km from the park.

The straight line column sorts the bases into three bands. Mendoza, Iguazú and Puerto Madryn sit between 986 and 1,075 km from the capital. Salta and Bariloche come next, at 1,286 and 1,345 km. El Calafate and Ushuaia are in a band of their own, at 2,080 and 2,373 km, which is why southern trips are planned as a separate block. Distance between bases matters as much. El Calafate and Ushuaia are 564 km apart in a straight line, less than the 986 km between Buenos Aires and Mendoza, while Iguazú to Salta is 1,095 km, farther than Iguazú is from Buenos Aires. In most combinations the capital works as the hub, and flights, not roads, set the pace.

Which places fit together?

Group the places by what sits in the same province or on the same road, and eight clusters appear.

ClusterPlacesWhat the distances say
Iguazú and the missionsIguazú Falls, Jesuit MissionsSame province, Misiones, but at opposite ends. UNESCO places the missions in the south of the province, Posadas is 320 km from Iguazú by the route the parks administration gives, and Puerto Iguazú is 18 km from the park
Buenos Aires and the capital areaESMA, Le Corbusier work, the city itselfOne city and one province. For the city, see our guide to things to do in Buenos Aires
MendozaMendoza and the Andes1,050 km by road from the capital. Mendoza is one of the seven provinces the Qhapaq Ñan crosses, while Ischigualasto and Talampaya are in San Juan and La Rioja, so they need their own days
The northwestSalta, Quebrada de HumahuacaSalta is 1,510 km by road from the capital, the Quebrada is in Jujuy, and the Qhapaq Ñan crosses both provinces
The Lake DistrictBariloche, Los AlercesBariloche to Esquel is 300 km and to Villa La Angostura 83 km, according to the tourism board. Los Alerces is in Chubut, the province of Esquel
Southern PatagoniaEl Calafate, El Chaltén, Los GlaciaresThe glacier is 80 km from El Calafate and El Chaltén 220 km, according to the national parks administration
Tierra del FuegoUshuaia564 km from El Calafate in a straight line, so it pairs with the south
Península ValdésPuerto Madryn1,075 km from the capital in a straight line, and it stands alone on the map

Two details are easy to miss. Cueva de las Manos is in Santa Cruz like Los Glaciares, but no official page we found gives the distance between them, so plan it as an extension and ask for the road time before you commit. The Lake District also has a second layer: the Cardenal Samoré border crossing is 136 km from Bariloche, according to the tourism board, and our Patagonia itinerary shows how the Chile side and the south fit into one route.

How many places can one trip hold?

Our shortest departures run three days for Iguazú and four days for most other regions, as set out in our guide to things to do in Argentina. Count three or four days per cluster, plus half a day for each flight between them, and the arithmetic gives these limits. They are our own recommendation, not an official figure.

Trip lengthClusters it holdsNotes
7 daysTwo at mostOnly if one of them is Iguazú, with its three day floor
10 daysTwo comfortably, three if one is IguazúOur 10 day Argentina itinerary is one worked example
14 daysThree or fourAdd one cluster only if the flights line up

If the south is your priority, our 10 day Patagonia itinerary shows how many days it takes on its own. If you are choosing between months, start with the best time to visit Patagonia, and for a December trip read Argentina in December. Two questions come up before almost every trip, and each has its own guide: is Argentina safe and is Argentina cheap to visit.

Choosing your places in one page

  • Start with the clusters, not the list. Eight clusters cover the main places, and a trip holds two to four of them.
  • Think in distance bands. Mendoza, Iguazú and Puerto Madryn are near 1,000 km from the capital, Salta and Bariloche a little farther, El Calafate and Ushuaia far beyond.
  • Pair the south. El Calafate and Ushuaia are 564 km apart in a straight line.
  • Respect the floors. Three days for Iguazú and four for most other regions.
  • Use the official list as a check. The 12 UNESCO properties are a fair test of what a region can offer, though not a trip plan.

If you already have dates, tell us when you travel and who is coming, and we will tell you which clusters fit.
