After landing at El Calafate Airport, you board a shared transfer for the scenic 4-hour drive to El Chaltén along the famous Route 40. The journey crosses the vast Patagonian steppe with sweeping views of Lake Viedma and Lake Argentino, connected by the La Leona River — where the legendary outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid once hid at a remote roadhouse. By the time the jagged granite towers of Mount Fitz Roy come into view, you'll know you've arrived somewhere truly special.

Transfer duration: Approx. 4 hours.

Overnight in El Chaltén.

El Chaltén: Laguna Torre Trail (Full Day)

Today you head out on the trail to Laguna Torre, a glacial lake set at the base of the impossibly steep Cerro Torre. The trail winds through lenga beech forests, crossing streams and offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks before arriving at the turquoise waters of the lagoon. This is Patagonia at its most raw and humbling.

El Chaltén: Laguna de los Tres & Mount Fitz Roy (Full Day)

Today's hike is one of the finest day treks in the world. You follow the trail to Laguna de los Tres, climbing through river valleys and ancient forests until the panorama of Mount Fitz Roy bursts into view — its granite towers reflected in the deep blue of the lagoon below. The final ascent is steep, but every step earns its reward.

Frequently asked questions

No technical experience is required. The trails in El Chaltén — including Laguna Torre and Laguna de los Tres — are well-marked and self-guided, making them accessible to independent walkers with a moderate fitness level. The main challenge is duration: both are full-day hikes of 7–9 hours with some steep sections near the final viewpoints. If you'd prefer to hike with a guide, this can be arranged at the time of booking at an additional cost.

No flights are included or needed within this itinerary. All transfers between destinations are covered by shared bus services — including the round-trip bus between El Calafate and Puerto Natales for the Torres del Paine section. The tour begins and ends at El Calafate Airport, so you'll only need to arrange your international or domestic flight into and out of El Calafate.

Most international travelers — including citizens of the USA, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia — do not require a visa for either Argentina or Chile for stays under 90 days. You will need a valid passport and may need to complete a border crossing form. We recommend verifying the current entry requirements for your nationality before travel, as regulations can change.

The tour operates from October through April, which is the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer season — the ideal time for hiking and outdoor activities across all destinations. December and January offer the longest days, while October, November, and March tend to be quieter with fewer visitors. We strongly recommend booking in advance, especially for peak season travel, as accommodations in El Chaltén and Puerto Natales fill up quickly.
