Iruya

It is an emblematic and picturesque tourist destination located in the northwest of Argentina, more specifically in Salta, but it can only be accessed from the province of Jujuy. Its name comes from the Quechua language meaning "abundant straw". Iruya is located at 2780 metres above sea level and approximately 320 kilometres from the capital city of Salta. It is well known for its geographical beauty, its narrow and steep streets, its adobe, stone and straw houses. Besides, it has imposing landscapes with breathtaking panoramic views. It is the classic dream mountain village. Owner of multiple cultural, economic and political identities, it has preserved its tradition since its origin, approximately 250 years ago. Considering the climate, the best months to travel to this mountain village are: June, July, August, September and October. In Iruya there is a perfect mix between the aboriginal and the Hispanic culture, which achieves an outstanding interculturality.

How to get to Iruya?

Although Iruya is located in the province of Salta, the only way to get there is from the province of Jujuy. The road is quite steep, with a cornice and a lot of gravel. On several occasions, there is only room for one car to drive.
The altitude is important, so as it is a mountain road, the driver must be experienced or professional. There are very narrow stretches when descending from Abra del Condor.
It is important to know that it is very difficult to get there during the rainy season (from December to March), the road becomes impassable and many times it has been necessary to assist people who have been stranded. In these situations, it is better to travel by bus or private transport, as the drivers are used to it. In addition, there may be fog or swollen rivers.
The way to get to Iruya is from Humahuaca, and you have to travel approximately 70 kilometres. You take National Route 9 up to the junction with Provincial Route 13, where there is a sign marking the road, which is a dirt road crossed by numerous rivers. From there, it is 19 kilometres to Iruya, on a road full of incredible panoramic views, curves and counter-curves.
It is highly recommended to drive slowly, at low speed and, if possible, during the day.
To get to Iruya from Tilcara, the best option is to have a private service that we can offer you from Argentina Pura.
