El Chaltén

Known as the Trekking Capital of Argentina, El Chaltén or Fitz Roy is a mountain peak located in the Patagonia area of Santa Cruz. It has a population of approximately 3000 inhabitants. This mountain is 3405 metres high and can be seen from 100 km away. It is the ideal destination for trekking and mountain lovers. It is located 220 km from the city of El Calafate and can be reached by bus, by private car along the most popular National Route N°3, which is asphalted and runs along the Atlantic coast. Or by the National Route N°40, which is the one that skirts the Andes Mountain Range, but has some gravel stretches. The duration of this trekking is about 5 hours or 8 hours round trip.

What to do in El Chaltén

Among the most popular trails are the following: Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre and Laguna Capri, which have been signposted and adapted by the Los Glaciares National Park. The first two treks are of medium difficulty and take between 8 and 9 hours. The last one is without difficulty, for beginners and takes between 4 and 5 hours. Another one that is also easy to do is the Blue Lagoon, in only two hours.
There are self-guided hikes that are free and require no previous experience. But, if you want to be adventurous and reach hidden places, it is advisable to hire an excursion or do the trekking with a specialised guide. Argentina Pura can take care of this for you.
