If you want the cheapest South American country to visit stated in one word, that is it, it has been the answer for years, and the two most recent surveys of daily costs agree.

Indie Traveller, revised in 2025, puts a backpacker day in Bolivia at 20 to 35 US dollars against 50 to 70 in Argentina and Chile. LatAm Travellers, published in May 2026 and updated in August, gives Bolivia 25 to 35 and puts Chile and Uruguay at the top of the range at 55 to 80. Different methods, same order: Bolivia, Paraguay, and Ecuador at the cheap end, Chile and Uruguay at the dear one.

So if the question is which country costs least per day, it is settled. The problem is that the daily rate decides very little about what a two week trip from North America or Europe actually costs, and this piece is about the parts that do.

If you would rather start from the routes themselves, our South America tours cross two or three countries in one trip, which changes the arithmetic in ways the country rankings cannot show.

Where the money actually goes on a two week trip

The daily budget figures above describe a particular way of travelling: hostels, street food, and overland buses, sustained over months. They are honest numbers for that trip. They describe a different holiday from the one most people book.

On a fortnight flown in from abroad, four things move the total, and only one of them is the daily rate.

De long haul flight is close to the same to any of them. Santiago, Lima, Buenos Aires, and Bogota are within a few hundred dollars of each other from most departure points, and that fare is often a quarter of the trip. Choosing a cheaper country does not make it cheaper.

De internal flights are where countries separate, and the separation is large. Argentina is about 3,700 kilometres end to end and most of the domestic network runs through Aeroparque, the city airport in Buenos Aires, so a route with Patagonia in it carries two or three internal flights and each one usually routes back through the capital. The frequencies show the same shape: Buenos Aires to Bariloche runs around sixty-five times a week, while El Calafate to Bariloche, two towns in the same region, runs three. Bolivia and Ecuador are compact enough that a good route needs one internal flight or none.

De season moves rooms more than borders do. January in Patagonia and August in the Andes are peak, and the same hotel can double.

And the days themselves are the scarce thing. On a fortnight, a day spent acclimatising or crossing a country is a day not spent on what you came for, and that has a cost even when it does not appear on an invoice.

What an organised trip works out at per day, by route

Here is the part the country rankings cannot give you, because it comes from a catalogue rather than a survey. These are real starting prices from our own routes, per person sharing, before international flights.

Route

Dagen

Van

Per dag

Buenos Aires, Iguazu, and Rio

9

1.815 €

about 200 €

South America Grand Tour

19

4.276 €

about 225 €

Uyuni, northern Argentina, and Chile

18

4.640 €

about 258 €

Argentina in nine days

9

2.885 €

about 321 €

Argentina and Chile with Patagonia and Atacama

17

6.715 €

about 395 €

Read the first and the last rows together. The cheapest day on that list crosses three countries, two of which the surveys call expensive. The dearest day stays inside two.

The pattern in that table is Patagonia, not Argentina

The routes at the top of the list share a shape: cities and one or two flagship sights, with short hops between them. The routes at the bottom share a different one: they go south.

Patagonia is the expensive part of Argentina, and it is expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with the exchange rate. The distances are large, the internal flights are unavoidable, the towns are small so rooms are scarce in season, and the good weather window is narrow enough that most visitors want the same weeks. Our ten day Patagonia route sets out what those days involve.

So the useful reframing is this: the country is a weak predictor of the bill, and the region inside it is a strong one. A fortnight of Buenos Aires, Iguazu, and Rio costs less per day than nine days that end at a glacier, even though Brazil ranks as dearer than Argentina on both surveys.

For what has happened to Argentine prices specifically since the currency controls were lifted, we went through it in what a trip to Argentina costs now. This piece deliberately stays on the comparison between countries.

What the cheap countries are cheap at, and what they are not

The rankings average across a basket, and the basket hides something useful: the gap between countries is wide on some lines and narrow on others.

Food and rooms are where the difference is real. A set lunch in Bolivia at two to four dollars against a Buenos Aires parrilla dinner is not a rounding error, and over a fortnight of daily meals it adds up to a meaningful sum. Hostel and mid-range hotel rates move in the same direction and by a similar factor.

Het goedkoopste Zuid-Amerikaanse land om te bezoeken, en wat het mist. A driver, a vehicle, fuel, and an English speaking guide cost broadly what they cost, because the vehicle and the fuel are imported and the guide is a scarce professional in any of these countries. Our three day Uyuni add-on starts at 384 €, which is not a Bolivian daily budget multiplied by three.

Park entries are set by policy rather than by cost of living, and they have been rising. In Argentina, foreign visitors pay 45,000 pesos at Los Glaciares and the same at Iguazu, against 15,000 for an Argentine resident and 5,000 for someone from the province. It is worth knowing before you arrive that these are paid in cash, in pesos, at the gate.

Internal flights are priced internationally. They are the line where the cheap countries save you the least, and the one that most often decides whether an itinerary works.

So the rule of thumb is that the further your trip leans on meals and rooms, the more the country ranking matters, and the further it leans on guiding, parks, and flying, the less it does.

The altitude tax on the cheap end

Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador really are inexpensive once you are there. They also sit high, and altitude is paid in days rather than euros.

La Paz is at about 3,600 metres and the Uyuni salt flats sit near 3,650. Cusco is at 3,400. Arriving from sea level and going straight to a full day at that height is how people lose the first part of a trip, so a sensible route builds in a gentler first day or approaches through somewhere lower.

On a six month trip that costs nothing, because there are more days behind it. On a fortnight it costs you one of fourteen, which is around seven per cent of the holiday, and it is worth pricing that honestly against a saving of twenty dollars a day.

The routes that handle this well tend to approach from the Argentine northwest, where Salta and the Quebrada de Humahuaca climb gradually, rather than flying straight into the high plateau. That is why our Uyuni route runs eighteen days rather than ten.

If you have a fixed budget and two weeks

Four decisions, roughly in the order they matter.

Pick the region before the country. Cities and waterfalls cost less per day than glaciers and deserts, in any country on the continent.

Count the internal flights. Two is normal on a good multi-country route. Four is a sign the itinerary is fighting the map, and each one costs money and most of a day.

Move the dates before you move the destination. October, November, and March in the south, and the shoulder either side of the dry season in the Andes, move the price more than swapping countries does.

Then, and only then, look at the daily rate. It is real, and it is the smallest of the four levers on a trip this length.

If the honest answer is that the budget does not stretch to the trip you had in mind, the useful move is usually to shorten it rather than to relocate it. Ten good days in one region beat fourteen thin ones across three.

So what is the cheapest South American country to visit, in practice

If cost per day is the deciding factor and you have time to spend, Bolivia, and the surveys have been saying so for a decade.

If you have a fortnight and a fixed sum, the question is better asked as which route gives you the most for it, and the answer is often a multi-country classic rather than a single cheap country. That is what the table above is really showing.

And if the honest answer for your dates is a country we do not sell, we will say so. It happens, and it costs us less than a trip that disappoints.

Tell us the dates, the number of days, and the figure you have in mind, and we will tell you what fits and what does not. Our multi-country routes and our Argentina and Chile trips are the two places to start.

Bolivia komt in beide recente onderzoeken naar de dagelijkse kosten naar voren.
