The reason it does not work at ten days is a single number, and it is worth getting right before anything else.

The border crossing, in hours rather than adjectives

El Calafate to Puerto Natales is two hundred and seventy kilometres. Door to door it takes about five and a half to six hours, of which roughly one is spent at the border posts themselves, twenty minutes or so on each side.

That is a travel day. Not a morning, not a transfer: you leave after breakfast and you arrive in the middle of the afternoon with nothing else in the day. On a ten-day trip you would pay that twice, coming and going, and the two days would come out of Ushuaia. At fourteen you pay it once, because the route below crosses the border and keeps going rather than turning round.

Two things about the crossing itself are worth knowing before the morning it happens. The formalities are two separate stops, Argentine exit and Chilean entry, with all passengers off the vehicle at each. And Chile does not let fresh fruit, vegetables, or animal products across: the packed lunch you assembled in El Calafate gets surrendered at the second post, so buy it after the border rather than before.

That single structural decision, crossing once instead of twice, is what two weeks buys you. Our guide to how many days Patagonia needs sets the lengths side by side, and our ten-day route is the version that stays in Argentina for exactly this reason.

The line the route draws, base by base

You fly in at one end and out at the other. Nothing is repeated.

Dagen

Base

Nights

De dagen

1 to 3

Ushuaia

3

Tierra del Fuego, the Beagle Channel, the lakes

4 to 6

El Calafate

3

Perito Moreno, the glacier navigation, an estancia

7 to 9

El Chalten

3

Fitz Roy en Cerro Torre

10

El Calafate

1

The transit night

11 to 14

Puerto Natales

3

Torres del Paine, Balmaceda, departure

Thirteen nights, four bases, one internal flight, one border. The trip runs north from the bottom of the continent and then west across the Andes, and the only road it covers twice is the short stretch back down from El Chalten.

Ushuaia first, and why the trip starts at the bottom

Starting at the southernmost point sounds like a detour and is the opposite. Ushuaia is the one base that is awkward to reach from anywhere except Buenos Aires, so putting it first means you fly there once, from the city, rather than fitting it around the rest.

Three nights is the right length for it. The half day in Tierra del Fuego National Park is about five hours with two and a half to three of them walking, on a circular route past Laguna Verde, the Rio Ovando, and Lapataia Bay, and the walking is three and a half kilometres on flat coastal ground. The full day over the Garibaldi Pass to Lakes Escondido and Fagnano runs seven and a half to eight hours and is mostly a vehicle day through glacial valley and forest. Between them sits the Beagle Channel navigation, a morning on flat water past sea lion and cormorant colonies and the lighthouse at Les Eclaireurs, with seating inside and a deck for when you want it. It is the one activity here that works in almost any weather, which makes it the natural thing to move when a forecast turns.

That is a full three days without a hard walk in it, which matters more than it looks: the two demanding days of the trip are still a week away, and starting gently is what makes them possible.

The glacier days from El Calafate

The flight from Ushuaia is about an hour and fifteen minutes, and the airport is twenty minutes from town.

Three nights here is more than the classic single glacier day, and the extra is the point. Perito Moreno is the day most people come for: the front visible from the first platform five minutes off the car park, then a railed walkway network with benches and a lift that lets you make the visit fifteen minutes long or two hours long.

The second day is the one most fourteen-day itineraries skip. The full-day navigation out across Lago Argentino runs eight to nine hours past the Seco, Heim, and Spegazzini glaciers, with an hour of forest walking and lunch in front of the Upsala glacier face. It is a different relationship with ice than the walkways give you, and it is only affordable in time on a trip of this length.

The third is an estancia day, about eight hours including transfers, with cattle work, shearing, and lamb. It is the day that reminds you Patagonia was a working landscape before it was a destination. Our El Calafate trips page lists all three.

El Chalten, and the three nights that justify the road

Two hundred and twenty kilometres north, about four hours the way we run it, with a stop at the roadhouse at La Leona. The five-day route covers that road in detail, including the fact that El Chalten has no petrol station.

Three nights buys both of the walks with a spare day between them, and in El Chalten a spare day is not a luxury. Laguna de los Tres is eight hours return with about four hundred metres of climb and a steep final hour over loose rock. Laguna Torre is six to seven hours, mostly flat, ending at a glacial lake with icebergs on it when the season cooperates. Both trails start in the village itself, so neither day is built around a pickup.

The weather here changes faster than anywhere else on the route. With three nights, a bad forecast moves a walk rather than deleting it. That is the whole argument for the third night, and it is why our El Chalten trips are built to three rather than two.

Day 10: the transit night that gets left out

Here is the day that goes missing from most two-week itineraries written by people who have not run one.

El Chalten back to El Calafate is three hours. El Calafate to Puerto Natales is another five and a half to six. Nine hours of road in a single day is possible and it is a waste of one of your fourteen. So day ten is a short morning in El Chalten, the road south, and a night back in El Calafate before the border.

It looks like a wasted night on paper. It is the night that makes day eleven a proper arrival in Chile rather than a collapse into a hotel at dusk, and it is the reason this route does not need to skip anything to fit.

Torres del Paine, from Puerto Natales

Three nights on the Chilean side, and the days are long ones.

The classic Torres del Paine day runs about ten hours: the Milodon Cave, Laguna Amarga, the Cuernos, the Salto Grande waterfall, a walk along the Paine river, and Grey Lake with icebergs on it. It is a driving day with walks attached rather than a trek, which is what makes it work for people who have already done Fitz Roy earlier in the week.

The second is a navigation of about nine hours into Bernardo O’Higgins National Park to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, with a kilometre of forest walking and a lamb roast at an estancia on the way back. The third, if you want it, is the wool day at a working ranch near Cerro Castillo, about seven hours, with sheepdogs and a spinning workshop.

If you would rather walk than ride, this is where the W circuit fits, and it changes the shape of the block rather than the length of the trip.

Leaving: the airport question

Puerto Natales has an airport, and it is smaller than the itinerary suggests. Scheduled service runs to Santiago and Puerto Montt on a handful of flights, thin outside the high season and worth confirming before you commit to leaving from there.

The dependable exit is Punta Arenas, further south, which is a road transfer of its own on the final morning. We would rather build the fourteenth day around a Punta Arenas departure with margin than around a Puerto Natales flight that runs three days a week. As with the shorter routes, the flight out is the thing to settle first and the itinerary that fits around it second.

Een guanaco op een heuvel, met het graniet van de Torres del Paine op de achtergrond.

It also means the trip needs two sets of arrangements rather than one, and that is the honest cost of the open jaw. You enter Argentina at the start and leave from Chile at the end, so any onward booking made on the assumption that you finish where you started will need redoing. It is a five-minute conversation at the planning stage and an expensive one at the end.

What the fourteenth day buys that the tenth does not

Four things, and they are not the ones people expect.

Tien dagen

Fourteen days

One country

Both sides of the Andes

Border crossed twice or not at all

Crossed once, going forwards

Two long walks, back to back

Two long walks with a spare day between

A lost weather day costs a highlight

A lost weather day costs a lie-in

The last row is the one worth reading twice. On this route there are three days that can absorb a bad forecast without anything being cancelled. On the ten-day version there is one. In a region where the weather turns in an afternoon, that is the difference between a plan and a hope.

Season, and the two adjustments worth making

November to March is the southern summer and the only window in which the Chilean block runs at full strength: the navigations are seasonal and the park is at its busiest and its most open. October and April are quieter and still workable, with the caveat that a fourteen-day trip in the shoulder months should keep its spare days rather than spending them.

Two adjustments come up often enough to name. If Torres del Paine is the reason for the trip, move a night from El Calafate to Puerto Natales and take the W circuit days rather than the classic drive. If the glaciers are the reason, do the reverse and add the second navigation from El Calafate.

We have not priced the fourteen days above, because it is assembled rather than published. The eleven-day version of the same route is on the site with its price, and the difference between the two is the El Chalten block.
