It is not enough for a third, and the whole route turns on one detail that rarely comes up until it is too late to change: what time your flight home leaves El Calafate.

What follows is the five days laid out one by one, with the road times, the length of each walk, and the constraint that decides whether the last day works at all. If you are still choosing a length rather than a route, our guide to how many days Patagonia needs sets five, ten, and fourteen days side by side.

Four nights, two bases, and no internal flights

Two bases, four nights, one road transfer, and no internal flights.

Giorni

Base

Nights

What the days hold

1

El Calafate

1

Arrival from Buenos Aires, slow afternoon

2

El Calafate

1

The Perito Moreno Glacier, full day

3

El Chalten

1

The road north, then a short walk

4

El Chalten

1

Laguna de los Tres, the Fitz Roy day

5

El Chalten

0

Short morning, road back, flight out

The reason this works in five days and a similar route through Ushuaia does not is that El Chalten is reached by road. You gain a second landscape without spending a day in two airports.

Day 1: arriving in El Calafate

The flight down takes about three hours and twenty minutes and leaves from Aeroparque rather than Ezeiza, which is the single most common way a Patagonia trip comes apart on day one. On five days it is worse than on ten, because there is no spare day anywhere to absorb it.

From the airport it is twenty minutes into town, and the rest of the day stays empty on purpose. There is a version of this route that puts the glacier on the arrival afternoon to buy a day back. It reliably produces a traveller who slept through the best part of it, and it is the wrong day to save.

Day 2: the glacier, and the one booking to make early

The glacier is an hour and a quarter from town by road, inside Los Glaciares National Park, and it is the easiest great day in Argentine Patagonia.

What makes it the right day two of a five-day trip is that it costs you nothing in energy. The walkways are metal, railed, and benched, with a lift between levels, and you set your own distance on them: a quarter of an hour or a couple of hours, both ending at the same wall of ice.

The decision to make in advance is the upgrade. The boat along the face and the ice trek across the surface both have to be held before you arrive, and the ice trek fills first in high season. On a five-day trip that booking is not a detail: there is no second glacier day to fall back on if it is full. Our El Calafate trips page lists both with their durations, and park entrance is paid on the day either way.

Day 3: two hundred and twenty kilometres north, and the only fuel stop

Two hundred and twenty kilometres, on paved road the whole way. About three hours of pure driving, or closer to four the way we run it, because there is a stop worth making.

That stop is Parador La Leona, at kilometre 100, an old roadhouse on the river of the same name. It is also the only fuel station between the two towns, which matters more than it sounds: El Chalten has no petrol station at all. Anyone driving themselves fills up in El Calafate and tops up at La Leona.

There are three ways to cover it, and they are not equivalent on a five-day trip. Scheduled buses run the route in both directions and are the cheapest option, but they leave on their own timetable, which on day five is the timetable that has to match your flight. A private transfer costs more and leaves when you do, which on a route with this little slack is usually worth the difference. Driving yourself gives you the La Leona stop on your own terms, at the cost of collecting and returning the car in El Calafate.

The last hour is the good one. The road turns onto RP-23 and the Fitz Roy massif sits on the horizon ahead of you for the whole approach, which is why we keep this as a daylight transfer rather than an early start.

You arrive early afternoon with time for one short walk. Chorrillo del Salto is flat and takes about an hour to a waterfall at the edge of the village. Mirador de los Condores is a little over an hour, climbs gently, and gives you the whole valley with the massif behind it. Either one gets your legs moving before the long day tomorrow.

Day 4: Laguna de los Tres, the Fitz Roy day

This is the day the trip is built around. Eight hours return at a steady pace, about four hundred metres of climb, of medium difficulty, with the last hour a steep push over loose rock that does most of the work of the reputation. The reward is the lagoon sitting directly beneath the tower.

The trail starts in the village, which is unusual and useful: there is no transfer at either end of it, so the eight hours are eight hours of walking rather than a day built around a pickup. It is well marked and busy in season, so a guide is an option rather than a requirement.

There are two shorter versions of the same day if the weather turns or the legs say no. Laguna Capri sits about two hours in and holds the classic reflection of the massif. Mirador Fitz Roy, an hour further, gives you most of the view without the final climb. Turning back at either is a good day rather than a failed one. Our El Chalten trips page has the trail profiles.

Day 5: why the departure time decides the whole route

Here is the part to settle before you book anything else.

Departures from El Calafate to Buenos Aires spread across the day, from around 08:20 in the morning to around 20:25 at night. The five days only work with an afternoon or evening departure. With a morning flight, the arithmetic collapses: you would need to leave El Chalten around five in the morning, and what you are calling a five-day trip is really four.

With an afternoon or evening flight, day five is a proper day. A short walk after breakfast, an unhurried lunch in the village, a departure around one in the afternoon, three hours back down the road to El Calafate, and you reach the airport with margin to spare. That margin is not a luxury on this route. The wind closes El Chalten to road traffic occasionally, and having three or four hours of slack between the transfer and the gate is the difference between a delay and a missed flight.

If the only flight that suits your onward connection leaves El Calafate in the morning, the honest answer is that this becomes a six-day trip with a last night back in El Calafate. It is a better trip that way, and it is worth knowing before rather than after.

The same logic applies to the long-haul leg. Departures out of Buenos Aires cluster in the evening, so an afternoon arrival from El Calafate connects comfortably on the same day, while a late evening one does not. We would rather build a night in Buenos Aires into a five-day Patagonia trip than run the transfer between the two airports against the clock.

The three things that do not fit into five days

Three things, and it is worth naming them rather than discovering them.

Cerro Torre. The walk to Laguna Torre is six to seven hours, low difficulty, and mostly flat, and it is the natural second Chalten day. Five days does not have room for it. A sixth day does, and that single extra day is the best value in the whole route.

Ushuaia. Escursionisti sul sentiero che porta alla Laguna de los Tres, a El Chaltén. ten-day route, where the arithmetic works.

Torres del Paine. esiste. fourteen-day route exists.

Two ways to rebalance the same five days

The route above splits the days two and two, with the glacier first. Two variants come up often enough to name.

For walkers. Move to El Chalten on day two instead of day three and give the village three nights. You get both Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, and you give up the Perito Moreno day. It is the version that suits people who came for the mountains rather than the ice.

For a slower pace. Keep both bases but replace the Fitz Roy walk with Laguna Capri and an afternoon in the village. Five days with one long walk instead of one very long walk, and the glacier day untouched.

How much walking five days actually means

Two of the five days involve real walking. The rest is a glacier walkway, a road, and an airport.

Giorno

Walk

Orario

Difficoltà

2

Perito Moreno walkways

Your choice, 15 min to 2 h

Flat, handrails, lift

3

Chorrillo del Salto or Mirador de los Condores

About 1 to 1.5

Flat to gentle

4

Laguna de los Tres

8 return, 400 m of climb

Medium, steep final hour

5

Short village walk

Under 1

Flat

Around ten to eleven hours on foot across the whole trip, with three quarters of it on a single day. That concentration is the honest cost of doing Patagonia in five days: there is no room to spread the effort, so day four decides how the week feels.

When to go, and how we would build it

November to March is the southern summer, with the longest days and the busiest trails. October, November, March, and April are the quieter shoulder months, and they suit this route particularly well, because the Fitz Roy trail in an empty April is a different walk from the same trail in January. Our guide to il periodo migliore per visitare la Patagonia goes through the trade-offs month by month.

One seasonal note specific to five days: with so little slack, a weather day hurts more here than on a longer trip. In the shoulder months we would rather put the Fitz Roy walk on day four and keep day three flexible, so a bad forecast can swap them without touching the flights.

We have not put a price on the shape above, because it is not one of our fixed routes. It is assembled from pieces we run every week, and what it costs depends on the hotel category, whether the Chalten walks are guided or self-guided, and which glacier upgrade you choose. Tell us the dates and we will price the version you actually want.

Il nostro Tour in Patagonia page lists the
