Dove prenotarlo

Vertice Patagonia

Paine Grande e Grey, la metà occidentale

vertice.travel

Las Torres Patagonia, formerly Fantastico Sur

Chileno, Frances, Cuernos e Central, la metà orientale

lastorres.com

CONAF, l'agenzia forestale statale

Ingresso al parco e piazzole gratuite

pasesparques.cl

Vertice first.

Come dormi

Cosa ti offre

Quanto ti costa

Campeggio o cupola completamente attrezzati

The W trek in Torres del Paine is 80 kilometres of well marked trail through Chilean Patagonia. Four to five days, three valleys, no technical climbing and no altitude to speak of. Physically it sits within reach of a reasonably fit walker who has done a few long days with a pack.

And yet a large share of the people who set out to do it end up not doing it, or doing a shortened version they did not want. The reason has nothing to do with fitness. It is that the W trek is decided months earlier, at three separate checkouts owned by three different organisations, each of which opens for sale on its own date. Miss that, and the trail is still there but the beds are not. This guide is about that part, because it is the part that decides whether the trip happens. For the park itself, with hours, tickets and entrances, see our Torres del Paine visitor guide.

What the W trek in Torres del Paine actually is

Three valleys hang off one shoreline, and on a map the shape they draw is a W. From west to east: the Grey glacier arm, the French valley in the middle, and the Ascencio valley that ends at the base of the towers. You walk into each arm, you walk back out, and you move along the base of the W between them.

Most people take five days and four nights. Daily distances run from roughly 11 kilometres on the shortest day to about 18 on the longest, on rocky and uneven ground, and Patagonian wind can turn a flat section into hard work with no warning at all. There is no camping wherever you like: you sleep at fixed points, and those points are the whole problem.

The towers at the eastern end of the W, the point most walkers build the route around.

We run the W Trek guided or self-guided, with refugios or camping, and shorter trips based in Puerto Natales. See our Torres del Paine tours.

The trek is decided at a checkout, not at a trailhead

Torres del Paine was assembled from private estancias, and the land came into the park without the beds coming with it. The result is a park where the trail belongs to the state and the places to sleep on it do not. Two private companies hold the concessions, split roughly west and east, and the state agency sells the ticket that lets you through the gate.

Who owns the bed

Where on the W

Where you book it

Vertice Patagonia

Paine Grande and Grey, the western half

vertice.travel

Las Torres Patagonia, formerly Fantastico Sur

Chileno, Frances, Cuernos and Central, the eastern half

lastorres.com

CONAF, the state forestry agency

Park entry and the free sites

pasesparques.cl

Three portals, three accounts, three payment steps, and no single basket that holds a W trek. Guides written before 2025 will send you to a Fantastico Sur booking page that has since been folded into Las Torres Patagonia, which is one of several small ways an out of date guide can cost you a night.

What the checkouts ask for is worth knowing before opening day, because on opening day the popular nights go in minutes. Each portal wants an account created in advance, the full name and passport number of each walker exactly as it appears on the document, and payment in the moment. Names cannot be swapped later on most bookings, which means a group of four needs four sets of passport details in hand before the sale opens, not after.

Refund terms differ between the two operators and tighten as the date approaches, so the nights you book are close to a commitment rather than a placeholder. Book the trek before you book the flights, not after.

Since May 2026 the park entry itself changed shape too. CONAF moved from a flat multi day pass to tickets tied to the section you intend to walk, sold online in advance. There are no card sales at the ranger station, so the ticket is something you carry in before you arrive, not something you sort out at the gate.

The order you have to book in

The order matters, and it is not the order most people try.

Vertice first. Paine Grande and Grey are the cheaper beds on the route and they clear out earliest. They are also the two that pin the western end of your itinerary, so until you hold them you do not know which shape of W you are walking.

Las Torres second. The eastern sites have more capacity and a wider price range, which buys you a little more room to manoeuvre once the western nights are fixed.

CONAF entry last. Now that the ticket is tied to a section, buying it before your nights are confirmed means buying a ticket for a route you might not end up walking.

The opening dates follow the same asymmetry. The private operators load the coming season around the southern autumn, in the months either side of May and June, and CONAF opens later, often not until September or October. So there is a long stretch of the year in which you can hold each bed on the trek and still be waiting to buy the ticket that gets you in. That gap is normal. It reads as a problem and it is not one.

[elementor-template id="30920"]

The beds choose your route, not the other way round

Most W trek guides open with the east to west versus west to east question, as though it were a matter of taste. In practice it is a matter of what was left when you booked.

Walking west to east you start at Paine Grande off the catamaran, take Grey and the glacier early, and finish with the towers, which gives the trek a rising ending. Walking east to west you get the towers on day one, when your legs are fresh and the light at dawn is easiest to plan for, and you finish at the glacier. Both work. What decides it is which combination of nights you could actually assemble across two booking systems.

This is why writing your dream itinerary first and shopping for it afterwards tends to end in disappointment. The productive order is the reverse: see what pairs of nights exist, then pick the walk that fits them. If you want the detail on the two ends of the route before you choose, we have written up the Grey glacier arm and what a night at Refugio Grey is like separately.

Fixed sleeping points, booked months ahead, are what shape the route.

The one night that decides your photograph of the towers

The image that brings most people here is the three granite towers lit red at sunrise. It lasts a few minutes and it depends on cloud, so it cannot be promised. What can be arranged is being in position for it.

The base of the towers sits at the top of the Ascencio valley. From the park entrance at Central it is a climb of around four hours, which puts a dawn arrival somewhere near two in the morning with a head torch. From Chileno, roughly halfway up the valley, the same arrival is a walk of about ninety minutes. That single difference is why Chileno is the most contested set of beds on the whole route, and why people who book late end up doing the towers as a long day walk in flat midday light.

If sunrise at the towers is the point of the trip, treat Chileno as the first night you book and build the rest of the W outwards from it. If it is a bonus rather than the point, book it last and spend your patience on the western nights instead.

Refugio, dome or tent

How you sleep changes what you carry, what you book and how much slack you have if the weather turns. It is the first decision, not the last.

How you sleep

What it buys you

What it costs you

Refugio bed, with meals

A light pack, hot food, a dry room and a drying rack after a wet day

The highest price, and the beds that sell out first

Fully equipped camp or dome

Tent, mat and often meals already on site, so you carry clothes and little else

Fewer sites offer it, and it moves with the season

Your own tent and stove

The lowest price and the widest choice of nights

A pack near 15 kilos and the full weight of Patagonian weather

Those three columns are also, more or less, the three ways to buy the trek from us: a guided W circuit staying in shelters, the same route self guided with shelters booked for you, or self guided with camping. The practical difference is not the walking, which is identical. It is who sits in front of the three portals on opening day, and who solves it when a refugio cancels in February.

There is a fourth way to sleep that sits outside the trek proper. EcoCamp and the hotels inside and around the park let you walk the same valleys as day hikes and return to the same bed each night. That is a different trip with the same views, and for a good number of travellers it is the better one.

When to go, and when to book

The season runs from roughly October to April. December to February brings the longest days and the steadiest temperatures, along with the strongest wind and the fullest refugios. October, November, March and April buy you a quieter trail and looser availability, at the price of shorter days and a wider spread of weather. From May to September the park restricts the route to walkers with a certified guide and much of the infrastructure closes.

Booking lead times follow the same curve. For the December to February window, six to eight months ahead is the realistic target. For the shoulder months, four to five. For April, two months is often enough. Those are not safety margins invented to make you hurry: they are roughly when the popular combinations stop existing.

Our wider guide to when to visit Patagonia covers how this window lines up with the Argentine side, which matters if the trek is one piece of a longer route rather than the whole trip.

What to do when the nights you wanted are gone

This happens often enough that it deserves a plan rather than a shrug. Three routes out of it, in the order we would try them:

Flip the direction. The combination that failed east to west sometimes exists west to east, because the two operators sell out at different rates.

Shorten to the arms that are available. A three night W that reaches the towers and the French valley is a real trek. Grey can be seen on a boat from Paine Grande if the night at the refugio is gone.

Move your base outside the park. From Puerto Natales you can reach the towers, the Grey shoreline and the Salto Grande on a four day trip without booking a single refugio inside the park. You lose the continuity of the trek. You keep the park.

If the trek was your reason for coming and none of these work for your dates, the honest answer is often a different route. The O circuit takes eight to nine days and its back half fills far more slowly, and other treks across Patagonia ask for no bed reservations at all.

[elementor-template id="25960"]

The walking is the easy part to plan. The nights are not.

Start with the sleeping plan

If you take one thing from this: do not start with the itinerary. Start with the calendar of what goes on sale when, hold the western nights first, and let the route fall out of what you managed to hold. People who work in that order walk the W. People who fall in love with a five day plan before checking availability tend to spend the following months trying to buy something that stopped existing in June.

If you would rather hand that part over, that is what we do. Tell us your dates and how you want to sleep, and we will tell you honestly whether the trek is still available in that window or whether you are looking at a different shape of trip.
